The Acropolis is one of the most famous places in Athens β€” and luckily, it’s easy to reach by public transport or on foot!

πŸ“ Where Is the Acropolis Located?

The Acropolis is a big rocky hill right in the center of Athens. It stands about 157 meters (515 feet) above sea level and gives amazing views of the city and the sea.

It’s surrounded by famous neighborhoods and ancient sites:

  • 🧭 South: Next to the beautiful pedestrian road Dionysiou Areopagitou Street
  • 🧭 East & North: Close to Plaka, Anaphiotika, the Ancient Agora, and Areopagus Hill
  • 🧭 West: Near the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, an ancient open-air theater

πŸšͺ Where Are the Entrances to the Acropolis?

There are two main entrances to the archaeological site:

πŸ”Ή 1. Main Entrance – West Side

  • Located near Theorias Street
  • Best for most visitors and group tours
  • Leads directly to the main path up to the Propylaea and Parthenon

πŸ”Ή 2. South Entrance – Dionysiou Areopagitou & Thrasyllou Street

  • Right next to the Acropolis Museum
  • Great if you're coming from Plaka, Makrygianni, or the Museum
  • This entrance leads through the South Slope β€” where you can see:
    • Theatre of Dionysos
    • Odeon of Herodes Atticus
    • Ancient shrines and paths

πŸ”„ If you enter through the South Entrance, you’ll exit at the top through the BeulΓ© Gate, and follow the signs back down through the South Slope.

⚠️ Important Ticket Info:
